MKU Opens New Mosque as Number of Muslim Students Hits 10,000 Mount Kenya University has begun the journey to inclusion and increasing the various demands on the multidenominational campus by opening a new mosque on its main campus. The multimillion facility is being opened as the number of Muslim students that are currently pursuing various academic courses at the university hit the 10,000 mark.
The mosque facility is meant to be a symbolic statement that the number of Muslims studying at the university has hit critical mass, hence requiring the university to start having facilities and services that serve Muslims. It is a public demonstration that the university needs to now recognize building for religious leaders to lead different religious groups to pray, it should also have other dedicated facilities to serve the religious needs of the students.
MKU is one of the largest private universities in East Africa, and has been attracting students who come from what are considered Muslim regions in Kenya and the East African region. A recent survey conducted states that of the 10,000 students enrolled in Mount Kenya University, 20 of the students studied there are now Muslims up from almost zero during the inception of the university. Some of the students who spoke in campus admitted that indeed the 10,000 Muslims who now constitute 80 percent or so of the students found that their classmates are also Muslims, hence compelling the university to now take more active steps that cater for their religious and cultural affiliations.
The news of the 10,000 student from the university also says that Muslims, for whom a quiet spot to pray, often meant praying out in the cold, have a place of worship. Many of MKU Muslim students hail from rural villages that have no mosque or permanent structures to offer prepared for them to worship.
Addressing the Need for a Campus Mosque
In response to heightened demand, MKU has erected a top-of-the-range mosque at its Thika main campus. Before the opening of the mosque, Muslim students relied on improvised prayer places, mainly lecture halls or temporary facilities, for their daily prayers. However functional these strategies were, they lacked the appropriate environment and space for communal prayers, especially on Friday (Jumu'ah) and other special religious occasions.
The new mosque was opened to great pomp with attendance from university officials, religious heads, and students, among others. It is purpose-built to cater to the needs of the Muslim community on campus and among other facilities provides a prayer hall, separate areas for men and women, ablution spaces (wudu areas), and space for religious gatherings. With a capacity to seat over 1,000 worshippers, the mosque is among the biggest university mosques in the region.
During the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of MKU, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, underscored the mosque's significance in enhancing religious freedom and inclusivity at the university. He acknowledged that the institution is dedicated to creating an environment whereby, regardless of their belief orientation or background, the student is provided the opportunity to excel both academic and spiritually.
"This mosque is more than a building; it epitomizes this university's commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and respect for religious faith. We understand that spiritual well-being constitutes a very important part of a student's life experience and we are therefore pleased to provide a place where our Muslim students can pray in freedom and comfort," Prof. Jaganyi expressed.
The Impact of the New Mosque on the Student Experience
The mosque is definitely a milestone in the lives of MKU Muslim students. A convenient place for worship is a reassuring feeling to the students whereby they get their prayers done, as well as build their community.
While there have been struggles in trying to fix a permanent prayer space for students, especially during the embarrassing busy academic schedule, many received the troubled waters of juggling academics with the need to source an appropriate prayer space-anybody that has gone through class hours during lectures can vividly imagine what prayer space means for students. The mosque will always have space available for prayers and religious activities.
Additionally, the mosque has as its goal the trend of formative elements of Islamic learning and developing community cohesiveness. Current arrangements are in place for lectures, Quranic learning sessions, and other programs for spiritual life to enhance the understanding of Islam among students. Aside from this, students can meet during such events as Eid prayers and Iftar dinners in Ramadan as a religious celebration.
"Muslim students' leaders at MKU have appreciated the university administration for addressing their requirements and proactively pursuing those issues. Chairman of the MKU Muslim Students Association has said that it will add a good deal to the spiritual and social life of the Muslim student body."The mosque is a dream come true for all of us. This will be a central point for us to unite as we pray, discuss faith, emphasize brotherhood and community, and grow in knowledge and wisdom. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the university for taking cognizance of our complaints and providing a facility that we all had longed for," he said.
Promoting Interfaith Dialogue and Understanding
The mosque at MKU is intended to foster interfaith dialogue and understanding within the university community. It’s a university which prides itself of diversity and the students come from different religious and cultural backgrounds. This mosque would provide a chance for students from different faiths to understand Islam and engage in productive dialogue on religious tolerance and coexistence.
The university shall be holding interfaith events and discussions that will foster mutual respect and understanding among the students of all faiths. This is in line with MKU’s undertaking to build a generation of global citizens who are, among other things, academically competent and culturally and socially aware.
Conclusion
The establishment of a mosque at Mount Kenya University should be considered a major achievement towards having an institution that meets the requirements of its diverse student body. As the number of Muslim students increases, the role of the mosque will also be great in addressing their spiritual concerns while in campus life.
This facility provided demonstrates MKU's strong commitment to inclusivity, religious freedom, and release of the student’s utmost development. The mosque is indeed a factor of pride for MKU as it provides the university with an excellent opportunity to promote an environment in which each and every one of its students flourishes, regardless of their background, religious or otherwise. As MKU advances through its growth stages, the mosque will always be a central figure in the flourishing and colourful life of the university.
