Tony Todd, Legendary 'Candyman' Star, Dies at 69

Hollywood has lost another icon as Tony Todd, the actor best known for his haunting portrayal in the Candyman horror series, passed away at age 69. Todd, a versatile figure in both film and television, died of natural causes at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday night.

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1954, Todd's career spanned over four decades, marking him as a memorable presence in various genres. His breakthrough role came in 1986 with Oliver Stone's Platoon, where he shared the screen with Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, and Johnny Depp. Yet, it was his role as the vengeful ghost of a former American slave in Candyman (1992) that solidified his place in horror cinema. The film’s success led to two sequels, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999), where Todd reprised his role. In 2021, he returned to the character in a film co-written by Jordan Peele, continuing his legacy with a new generation.

Beyond Candyman, Todd showcased his talents across a variety of films, including The Crow, Night of the Living Dead, The Rock, and the Final Destination series. His distinctive voice and towering presence brought an eerie quality to roles, especially in horror and science fiction. He also had a recurring role on Star Trek, where he portrayed Commander Kurn, the brother of Worf on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine.

Todd's career extended to the stage, with highlights including a Broadway run in the musical Aida. He remained active in the entertainment industry until his passing, making recent appearances at fan conventions like Monsterpalooza in May 2024, where he joined a Candyman panel, reflecting on his enduring influence in horror.

Todd is survived by his two children, who now carry on his legacy. His unique contributions to horror and science fiction will continue to be celebrated by fans worldwide.
