How a Supermarket Receipt Helped Solve the Murder of Deka Abdinoor Gorone

On October 31, the remains of a woman were discovered at the entrance to Lang'ata Cemetery, sparking a chilling investigation that led to the discovery of a heinous crime. The victim, later identified as Deka Abdinoor Gorone, was brutally murdered and had her body subjected to disturbing post-mortem mutilation. The case was only cracked after a seemingly innocuous item—a shopping receipt—provided the breakthrough investigators needed.

The Victim’s Last Moments

Deka Abdinoor Gorone had left her home in the California estate, Nairobi, and traveled to the Lavington area. She checked into a short-stay apartment where her killer, Hashim Dagane Muhumed, was waiting. After settling into the room, Deka went out for shopping at a nearby supermarket. Surveillance footage captured her entering the store, where she made a payment using her mobile phone, after which she took the receipt and placed it in her pocket.

What seemed like an ordinary purchase would become a critical piece of evidence in the days to come.

The Horrific Discovery at Lang'ata Cemetery

The victim's remains, which had been wrapped in a black paper bag, were found at Lang'ata Cemetery. Police were initially unsure about the identity of the woman, but a closer examination of the crime scene led to a crucial clue. Alongside the remains, investigators recovered a supermarket receipt. The receipt contained vital information such as the supermarket's name, the time of purchase, and, most importantly, the payment method—M-Pesa. Using this information, investigators were able to trace the mobile phone number linked to the transaction.

Tracing the Receipt to Deka Abdinoor Gorone

Upon examining the receipt and tracing the mobile phone number, the investigators confirmed that the purchase had been made by none other than Deka Abdinoor Gorone. The number was registered under her name. A missing person’s report had been filed on October 24, and her family had already reported her disappearance to the California Police Station. CCTV footage from the supermarket also confirmed that the woman in the footage was indeed Deka.

With this information, investigators were able to establish a timeline of her last known movements and quickly zero in on her prime suspect—Hashim Dagane Muhumed, who had been in frequent contact with Deka in the days leading up to her murder.

The Killer’s Connection to Other Murders

A deeper dive into Deka’s phone records revealed that she had been in regular communication with Hashim. Investigators also uncovered disturbing connections between Hashim and a series of other murders in Eastleigh, Nairobi, where he was linked to the deaths of a mother, her daughter, and her niece. This was not the first time Hashim had been involved in a violent crime.

The police traced Deka’s final movements to an apartment in Lavington, where it is believed she spent time with Hashim. It was in this apartment that Deka’s life was brutally taken.

The Pursuit of the Killer

On October 31, investigators learned that Hashim was seen leaving the apartment carrying two bags, which were later believed to contain Deka’s remains. Authorities tracked Hashim’s movements and found that he had fled the scene, going into hiding. However, his escape was short-lived.

Despite efforts to track Hashim across several locations, including Eastleigh, Lavington, and even extending the search to Somalia and Ethiopia, Hashim remained elusive for days. Police were hot on his trail, tracking him through CCTV footage, phone records, and tips from informants.

On November 2, Hashim was captured on CCTV leaving a building in Eastleigh, prompting a renewed effort to apprehend him. After evading capture for nearly two weeks, Hashim was finally arrested on November 3.

A Terrifying Past and a Complex Case

Hashim, originally from Ethiopia, had previously served as a regional police officer before moving to Kenya, where he worked as a driver for various schools in Eastleigh. Upon his arrest, police discovered several fake documents, including a counterfeit Kenyan ID. Hashim had been using multiple phone numbers in an attempt to mislead investigators, but his efforts ultimately failed.

His capture raised more questions about his involvement in the gruesome Eastleigh murders, as well as the chilling killing of Deka Abdinoor Gorone. Investigators are now interrogating Hashim to determine the motive behind the murder and whether there are any other victims tied to his violent past.

The Role of the Receipt in Solving the Case

It was, however, the simple shopping receipt that turned the tide of the investigation. What seemed like an everyday item became a key piece of evidence that led to the identification of Deka Abdinoor Gorone. Without this receipt, it’s likely that her murderer would have remained at large, and the case would have gone unsolved.

As the investigation continues, the motive behind Deka’s murder remains unclear, but police are confident that they will uncover the truth behind the gruesome crime. The receipt, which led to the unraveling of a chilling mystery, serves as a reminder of how even the smallest pieces of evidence can play a pivotal role in solving complex cases.
