Over 90 Women Killed: Ruto Demands Justice and Public Support to Combat Femicide

 President William Ruto recently addressed a press briefing on the concerning increase in femicide cases in Kenya, where over 90 women have been killed in the past three months. The President called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other agencies to expedite investigations and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. He reiterated the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy toward gender-based violence.


Ruto also urged the public to be vigilant, encouraging citizens to report suspicious behavior and protect women and girls from unsafe environments. Senior police officials shared that 90% of the cases are under investigation, with significant progress made in apprehending suspects. The National Police Service assured the public of their dedication to pursuing justice.



Gender Principal Secretary Anne Wang’ombe attributed the rising femicide rates to mental health issues, exposure to violent media, and economic hardships, calling for greater awareness and action to address these root causes. She emphasized that while the government works on security measures, societal awareness remains key to preventing further violence​​​​.
