The Kenyan police have clarified the circumstances of 24-year-old Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti’s death after rumors spread that he was abducted. According to the National Police Service (NPS), Mwiti died in a hit-and-run accident on November 12, 2024, along the Thika Super Highway.
The police report says Mwiti was riding a hired motorcycle near Spur Mall when a car hit him and drove away. Unfortunately, he did not have any identification documents, so his body was recorded as “unknown” and taken to the General Kago Hospital Mortuary.
To identify him, police took his fingerprints and sent them to the National Registration Bureau. On November 21, 2024, the results confirmed the body belonged to Mwiti. His mother reported him
missing four days after he was last seen, on November 15.
Mwiti’s mother, following her religious beliefs, swore an affidavit on January 2, 2025, to stop any post-mortem on his body. He was buried the next day.
Before the police shared these details, there were reports that Mwiti had been abducted and killed, causing public concern. The NPS has criticized media outlets for spreading unverified information, saying it could mislead the public and cause unrest. They have urged journalists to check facts before publishing stories.
Mwiti’s case has brought attention to other cases of missing people in Kenya. Families are still searching for loved ones like Billy Mwangi and Rony Kiplangat, among others. These disappearances have made people worry about their safety and trust in law enforcement.
The tragic death of Ibrahim Mwiti reminds us of the importance of responsible reporting and thorough investigations. While the police have explained what happened to him, they must work harder to resolve other cases of missing people to reassure Kenyans about their safety.
