A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer tragically lost his life in Likoni, Mombasa, following an altercation with a boda boda rider over a fare dispute. The incident, which occurred on Friday, escalated when the officer allegedly brandished a firearm and fired shots into the air.
According to a police report, the officer had been transported by boda boda rider Antony Otieno from Vyemani Grounds. Upon reaching his destination, the officer reportedly declined to pay for the ride, leading to a disagreement.
The situation worsened when the officer retrieved a firearm from his bag and fired into the air, causing panic. In the ensuing scuffle, the rider managed to disarm him. Residents who witnessed the incident intervened, and the officer sustained fatal injuries during the confrontation.
Two bystanders, identified as Claudia Mwashikaji and Mary Trizer, were injured by stray bullets during the chaos. They were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving treatment alongside the boda boda rider, who also sustained minor injuries.
Police officers from Inuka Police Station arrived at the scene, recovering a firearm, ammunition, and other items as part of their investigation. The officer's body was taken to Coast General Mortuary for further examination.
Authorities are investigating the incident to establish the full details and circumstances surrounding the tragic event. This case highlights the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and adherence to the law in all situations.
